In the end of this book, Lorenzo and Olivia left each other. Lorenzo haven’t contact with Olivia for many years, and the last time Lorenzo saw Olivia was her died body. From my opinion, this ending really shocked me. I thought after that torture of withdrawing, Olivia would never take drug again and have her own life. I thought Olivia would live a happy life with her boy friend, have some children… Just like normal women. However to my surprise Olivia died because of overdoes which means she started to take drug again and took a lot.

When I was reading this book, I thought this book would have a happy ending, but it doesn’t. Just like the book’s cover, blue shows sadness. In a normal story, Lorenzo would become more normal. Olivia would change into a unique women who has a strong thought. Usually people who can recover from withdraw can stand anything. They would contact with each other very often and help each other when they are having trouble. Just like close friend. They really had a memorial time in the basement together. They ought to contact each other. However this is not a normal story, we don’t know what happened to Lorenzo in this past 10 years, but we do know that Olivia took drug again.

There is an interesting point that I found in the last part which is Olivia kept Lorenzo’s information with her. From my point of view, I believe Olivia appreciates what Lorenzo did for her and she trusts him. When she is in danger, the only person she could find when she needs help was Lorenzo. This also shows Olivia is very lonely, no matter how she trust him, they haven’t contact for 10 years, and they are also not the closest family member. So this means Olivia doesn’t has any close friend that she could trust. She also didn’t write her parents contact information which means she still doesn’t has a good relationship with her family. After Olivia left Lorenzo, there must be something happened on her otherwise she won’t not contact with Lorenzo. Maybe the thing that happened on her is the reason she took drug again.

This book is different then the Gathering of Pearls. I am so much more interested in this book because none of my friend is like Lorenzo. I am also curious about what people like Lorenzo are thinking all day. The only difference of Lorenzo with others is he doesn’t like to care about other people’s matters. No matter how weird people think he is, people like Lorenzo still have love and emotional feelings. This book shows the importance of family relationship. Never block yourself out, just like the ants he has. Family members can give you necessary help when you are in trouble. Some time to be too smart as Lorenzo is not a good thing. Lorenzo understand what his parents want him to do, so he doesn’t live a happy life. Sometime pretending little bit stupid is right

How has Lorenzo changed by the end

Lorenzo has changed from a naughty boy to a man who can feels love.

Lorenzo used doesn't wanted to talk with anyone because he thought they were dumb. After this experience he changed his mind and started to accept others.

"In my den she was safe, hidden away. Nobody could hurt her." Lorenzo has connections with her sister and they has almost same personalities. These made Lorenzo love his sister. His love shows on his movements of saving his sister and his thoughts on trying to protect her.

A small matter in life can really changes a person.

Lorenzo doesn’t want Olivia to stay with him was first because he doesn’t have enough food for both of them. He hided in the basement, tried to do everything carefully, not to make any sound. However, Olivia might not be as sensitive as him. He was so afraid of being find out didn’t went to the ski trip. He said that he would rather die. “ It’s a trap!” He doesn’t trust anyone except him self at that moment. He is not familiar with Olivia so he doesn’t really trust her. Also, Olivia doesn’t like their father, even though he gives her money. She described her self in a letter as a proof of a wrong relationship. She thought her father doesn’t like her. “ I was thinking that is I had to write a book that tells the story of my life I would call the chapter on you ‘Diary of a Hatred.’” She felt that her father never loved her, always looks serious. Lorenzo read the letter and thought Olivia doesn’t know father in real life. Lorenzo loves his father but Olivia doesn’t. People usually hate others who keep different opinions. Just like Lorenzo doesn’t like Olivia. This is another reason why he doesn't allow her to live with him.

Lorenzo closed his phone for several days because he doesn’t know how to let his mom talk with Alessia’s mom. He has no way to solve this problem. When he finally opened his phone and received many phone calls and massages that said his parents were worrying. Lorenzo was nervous and anxious. When his mom called him and insisted to talk with Alessia’s mom, the only way was to let Olivia pretend to be Alessia’s mom. Before this phone call, Olivia begged for sleeping in basement for more days. During this phone call, Lorenzo begged to Olivia. Olivia threatened him so Lorenzo has to let her stays. Everything was because he was so nervous. He afraid Olivia tells his parents the truth so he has to agree any groundless requirement from Olivia, including let her stay.

Olivia was not as pretty as before, be she was still attractive. She has no place to live, she was more skinny, more unhealthy. Her body and her clothes all showed she is having a tough life. Obviously she was sick. The disease made her hard to sleep, hard to move. She looked painful. “ She panted with her eyes closed.” “ Olivia was sitting on the edge of the settee, all sweaty, jiggling her legs anxiously and staring at the floor.” Lorenzo thinks Olivia is still his half sister so he decided to help her.” She was like those people… who sit on the benches… ask you if you have any change” He was sympathetic so he gave her food, gave her blanket, and gave her place to sleep. “ Purple spots studded with little red dots.” She said she had malaria. This is a serious disease that make Lorenzo felt bad about her.

Story of Chantelle's winter break

Once upon a time, Chantelle went back to China and spend time with her family during winter break. Her parents gave her surprise that her father gave her a new phone without telling her mother and her mom took her to XiaMen without telling her father. 

XiaMen is a small city located in South China. Many couples prefer to take their wedding pictures there because it is a romantic place but Chantelle doesn't really like it. She thinks that place is too commercial for her. Not as she imagined, it ought to be a place which is very quiet and people are friendly. Even though the scenery is awful however the local food was awesome. Chantelle was on diet before she went to XiaMen. After she came back to Beijing, she gained 1kg of weight. She just can't control her self from havering those delicious food. Her mom went too XiaMen 10years before. She said every thing in this City has changed, scenery is not as attractive as before, fish ball is not as delicious as the one in her memory. Chantelle and her mom didn't enjoy the city but they enjoyed spending time together.

It was a happy time, no homework, no school, no pressure...Chantelle and her mother only stayed in XiaMen for 4 days because her mom has to work. She haven't spent such a nice trip so far with her mom. But this trip also gave her a lot of pressure. The better her parents treat her, the more expectation they have on her. She is now afraid that if she doesn't complete her parents' wishes, how disappointed they will be.
