analysis:

Through the experience with Gus in movie The Fault in Our Stars，Hazel changed her opinion of death: she is no longer afraid of death ,she understands the meaning of being alive is to enjoy everyday life.
outline:
The book You and Me tells a story about Lorenzo has changed after his experience with his half sister. He walked out through his small world. Lorenzo used to be a person who only care about his family and he used want to be a hero, but after this experience he started to think for others, started to accept others, and he also do effort to be a hero. The movie The Fault in Our Stars is similar to You and Me. Both of them described a person's changes through his / her experience with another person who has relationship with him/ her. In the movie, the main character Hazel who is a dying 17 years old girl because of cancer. The one who changed Hazel is Gus, a 18 years old boy also suffering by cancer and lose one leg. However they have almost different personality, Hazel is negative but Gus is positive. At first Hazel thought she is just a person who is going to die, she traveled with Gus and understood the meaning of life is to challenge new things and enjoy everyday life.

Summary of The Fault in Our Stars

The main character’s name is Hazel, a 17 years old girl who has thyroid and impressive satellite colony in lungs. She met a boy named Gus in a support group named The Heart of Jesus. He is 18 years old and cut one of his leg because osteosarcoma. Hazel is negative but Gus is really positive. Even if he lost one of his leg, he described him self as part cyborg. He enjoys his life. But Hazel doesn’t like to make friends and go out door. They also have different arguments of being forgotten. Gus intend to live an extraordinary life to be remembered but Hazel think oblivion is inevitable.

Even though they have so many differences, they fell in love quickly. They exchanged their favorite books. The book Hazel likes is An Imperial Affliction, a book about cancer. She really like the writer Peter Van Houten because she thinks he really knows the feeling of death. This book stops in the middle of a sentence which means it doesn’t have an ending. Both Hazel and Gus want to know the ending. Hazel has written to the writer so many times but never got receives. So Gus found writer’s secretary’s email and emailed her. The writer invited them to Amsterdam but Hazel’s parents doesn’t have money and worried of Hazel’s health. A foundation named Genies which is help young children who are going to die to achieve their dream. Hazel has used her wish when she was 13. But Gus save his wish. Genies agreed him to go to Amsterdam and invite Hazel as well. They had a lot of fun in Amsterdam. Peter Van Houten is not as well as they imagined, he is a old man who doesn’t want to be disturbed by readers. He pretened he doesn’t like Hazel an Gus, but actually he likes them. Gus understands what he is thinking.

They story has a really sad ending. Gus died because his cancer spread throughout his body. In his funeral, Peter Van Houten was invited. He gave Hazel a letter. Gus wrote to Peter Van Houten and asked him if he can writer the ending to Hazel.

At first Hazel thought she is just a person who is going to die, just like what she said；“Depression is the side effect of dying.” Pain is able to see all the time in this movie, the pain from cancer, the pain from Hazel’s parents… They hurt each other because of pain, but they also know each other’s love so they forgive the pain. The movie gives people a new view of death. A person’s death is not the ending but the new start for people whose alive. Hazel said funeral is not for people who has died, it is prepared for people whose still alive. Funeral is a chance for people to remember the died person, it is a chance to take love and start again. In this world, we only have to be remembered by the people we love and the people who love us, that is enough.

The main characters are Hazel and Gus. They know each other because they both have cancer. Gus only has one leg and Hazel has to take oxygen carrier all the time. They have many similarities, for example they like a same writer. Hazel used to think her life is going to be end in a few days so she became disappointed and hopeless. But Gus changed her mind, he stayed with Hazel, travels with her, challenged many things that Hazel haven't done before. He light up Hazel's hope again. His death also helped Hazel knows that it is doesn't matter to make how many people remember you, the most important thing is how many things you have remembered before you die.

An old men's wife died and he wanted to achieve his wife's dream---travel around the world. A boy persuaded him many time and the old man finally agreed him to travel together. They used many balloons to make the house fly.They experienced a lot together. At first every time the old man saw his wife's stuff, he was always disappointed. But at the end he placed the chair beside the waterfall means he finally understand even if his wife's body died, she always lives in his heart.

Elisa has supernatural power which is to frozen everything. She accidentally hurt her sister annie and lead to her parents' death. She was guilty all the time so she chose to lock her self in her room. When the time for her to be a queen, she was too anxious that everyone in her country knows she haas super power. She then run to the mountains and build a castle. She decided not to see anyone and live alone forever. Annie changed her mind and helped her understanding their is nothing to be afraid of.

The story tells a girl and a boy who both have cancer. They fall in love. The girl was depressed and the appearance of the boy changed her life. She used to think their is no reason for her to live like a healthy  person because she knows she is going to die. But the boy told her that no matter how many things you have suffered, live happily is always necessary.

Intouchable 

The movie tells a men who is rich but crippled doesn't satisfied with his nursing workers because they treated him not like a normal person. So he hire a black man who came from poor section and just went out of jail. It seems like they shouldn't have any connection but they changed their life attitude and helped each other.

In the end of this book, Lorenzo and Olivia left each other. Lorenzo haven’t contact with Olivia for many years, and the last time Lorenzo saw Olivia was her died body. From my opinion, this ending really shocked me. I thought after that torture of withdrawing, Olivia would never take drug again and have her own life. I thought Olivia would live a happy life with her boy friend, have some children… Just like normal women. However to my surprise Olivia died because of overdoes which means she started to take drug again and took a lot.

When I was reading this book, I thought this book would have a happy ending, but it doesn’t. Just like the book’s cover, blue shows sadness. In a normal story, Lorenzo would become more normal. Olivia would change into a unique women who has a strong thought. Usually people who can recover from withdraw can stand anything. They would contact with each other very often and help each other when they are having trouble. Just like close friend. They really had a memorial time in the basement together. They ought to contact each other. However this is not a normal story, we don’t know what happened to Lorenzo in this past 10 years, but we do know that Olivia took drug again.

There is an interesting point that I found in the last part which is Olivia kept Lorenzo’s information with her. From my point of view, I believe Olivia appreciates what Lorenzo did for her and she trusts him. When she is in danger, the only person she could find when she needs help was Lorenzo. This also shows Olivia is very lonely, no matter how she trust him, they haven’t contact for 10 years, and they are also not the closest family member. So this means Olivia doesn’t has any close friend that she could trust. She also didn’t write her parents contact information which means she still doesn’t has a good relationship with her family. After Olivia left Lorenzo, there must be something happened on her otherwise she won’t not contact with Lorenzo. Maybe the thing that happened on her is the reason she took drug again.

This book is different then the Gathering of Pearls. I am so much more interested in this book because none of my friend is like Lorenzo. I am also curious about what people like Lorenzo are thinking all day. The only difference of Lorenzo with others is he doesn’t like to care about other people’s matters. No matter how weird people think he is, people like Lorenzo still have love and emotional feelings. This book shows the importance of family relationship. Never block yourself out, just like the ants he has. Family members can give you necessary help when you are in trouble. Some time to be too smart as Lorenzo is not a good thing. Lorenzo understand what his parents want him to do, so he doesn’t live a happy life. Sometime pretending little bit stupid is right

How has Lorenzo changed by the end

Lorenzo has changed from a naughty boy to a man who can feels love.

Lorenzo used doesn't wanted to talk with anyone because he thought they were dumb. After this experience he changed his mind and started to accept others.

"In my den she was safe, hidden away. Nobody could hurt her." Lorenzo has connections with her sister and they has almost same personalities. These made Lorenzo love his sister. His love shows on his movements of saving his sister and his thoughts on trying to protect her.

A small matter in life can really changes a person.
